Sports parents have recently been bombarded with high profile media stories regarding sexual abuse scandals in youth sports. The details of these stories are difficult to hear. The extent of the reported abuse has the potential to create considerable fear and unrest in the minds of parents. Parents may begin to question the safety of their own children during organized sports and all extra-curricular activities.

Thankfully, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has responded to the recent media surge about abuse in youth sports with new educational resources for parents. The AAP’s parent website, www.healthychildren.org posted several helpful articles to help parents devise a plan to assure the safety and well-being of their children who are involved in organized sports and activities.
