How Does an MIS Operating Room Work? 

Our operating room technology brings together information from multiple cameras and monitors, allowing the surgeon and staff to see inside and outside the body and to evaluate in real time how your child is responding to the procedure. 

In minimally invasive surgery, a high-definition camera with a light source is placed into the body through a small incision with a scope that magnifies the surgeon’s operating area up to 10 times.  The surgeon can see precisely where to perform the surgery with the least amount of disturbance to surrounding tissue inside the body.  This helps to minimize your child’s pain and discomfort and allows for a speedier recovery.

Large screen high definition (HD) TVs monitors are mounted on the walls of the operating room so that the entire operating staff can see what the surgeon sees through the scopes placed inside the body.

Another high definition camera looks directly over the patient and another camera monitors the entire room.  All of these real time images of your child can be shown on any of the monitors in the room, so that the entire team can view every moment during the surgery.

Medical Information Available for Immediate Viewing During the Operation

Using another technology, the surgeon can retrieve all of your child’s current and previous medical information pertinent to have available during surgery—x-rays, scans, lab reports and any other critical information.

The information is available through the surgeon’s iPad and accessible at any time, so that surgery can be pre-planned using the most up-to-date information about your child’s condition.

Technology to Keep Your Child Safe

The combination of all of the monitoring technology and cameras allows many more staff in the operating room to see every aspect of the surgical procedure, dramatically increasing patient safety for your child.

Before beginning the procedure, staff has a surgical “time out” and uses a checklist from the system that is specific to your child’s surgery to verify all important information before proceeding.

Similar to a dashboard in a car, the multiple monitors in the operating room display, update and record all critical information such as response to anesthesia, blood pressure, temperature and oxygen levels for the patient.  Everything the team needs to know is immediately available and automatically updated throughout the surgical procedure.

The monitoring devices can “talk with each other” so that one device can tell another one to increase, decrease or shut down based on changes in your child’s condition
