Understanding West syndrome
West syndrome is the triad of Infantile Spasms, hypsarrhythmia (abnormal, chaotic electroencephalogram reading) and developmental regression (mental retardation or developmental delay).
Treatment for West syndrome
Treatment is focused on clearing up the hyparrhythmia and stopping the spasms.
Intramuscular adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) has shown to be most effective medication. However, oral steroids and conventional anticonvulsants also can be effective for some patients.
