HCA/HealthONE broke ground in May 2008 on its new pediatric hospital, Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children on the campus of P/SL in Denver, Colorado.

Nearly 20 years ago, several of Denver 's leading Pediatric Physicians, Pediatric Subspecialists, Pediatric Surgeons, Maternal-Fetal Specialists and Neonatologists moved their practices to Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center with a vision of establishing the region's leading pediatric care team for families, from conception to birth and from teen years into adulthood.

"HealthONE's new pediatric hospital will help us meet the burgeoning demands we now have from families from across the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains for specialized children's medical services," says HealthONE President and CEO Jeff Dorsey.

"And, because the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children will also have a presence at all of our acute care hospitals, newborns, children and teenagers across the Metro Denver area will have high-caliber pediatric care — close to home — from the people they already trust for their healthcare."

The touchstone of HealthONE's new investment in Colorado kids will be:

• $113 million free-standing facility on the P/SL campus in Denver at 19th Avenue and High Street.
• The project begins with construction of a medical office building and an ambulatory surgery center.
• The expansion project will add 100,000 square feet for the new pediatric center, featuring new:
  • Pediatric Cancer Center
  • Heart Center
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
  • Minimally Invasive and General Surgery Operating Rooms
  • Dedicated Emergency Department
  • Diagnostic Imaging Center

"Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center is a world-class children's hospital-within-a-hospital. We've been here for many years — and we've simply outgrown our space," says President and CEO Mimi Roberson.

"Clearly, the best decision for our adult patients as well as our youngest patients was to create a new, state-of-the-art facility that offers a nurturing environment so our medical staff can continue to serve all our patients — whether they are high-risk newborns, children, teenagers or adults."

The central location of Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL has increased services to include neurosurgery, sports medicine, bone marrow transplants, neurology and nephrology, all of which will be integrated into the entire system of hospitals. Other HealthONE hospitals also will open pediatric multi-specialty clinics for the convenience of families who live in the surrounding areas.
